Mass in other liturgy forms:

Latin Mass in Ordinary Form (Roman Rite)
The term Latin Mass may refer to a Tridentine Mass (see below) or to a mass in ordinary form (just like regular Mass in Dutch or English) that contains elements spoken or sung in Latin. The international mass in Enschede may contain some songs in Latin, while most parts are in English. A more formal Latin Mass according to the ordinary form is usually celebrated on Sundays at 9.30am at Saint Lambert's Basilica Hengelo. But please check the website of the Parish in Hengelo for up to date infomration.

Tridentine Mass
Tridentine Mass (Roman Rite)
Ambrosian Mass (Milanese Rite)
The Tridentine Mass is the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite Mass and is in use since 1570. It is celebrated in Latin, although parts like the homily may be in the local language. Please check the website of the Archdiocesan Apostolate for the Tridentine Liturgy, which also provides information on Ambrosian Mass celebrated in the Milanese Rite.

Anglican Use (Anglican Rite)
Anglican Use is the liturgical worship of former Anglican communities that joined the Catholic Church. There are currently no Anglo-Catholic communities (as far as we know) in the Netherlands.

Eastern Rites
Churches following eastern rites are also common within the Catholic Church. Holy Qurbana is the Syro-Antiochene name for what is called Mass in the Roman tradition of Catholic liturgy, while it is called Divine Liturgy in Byzantine tradition of Catholic liturgy. The communities mentioned below are all in communion with the Bishop of Rome.

The Dutch Syrian-Catholic community here.
The Dutch Chaldean-Catholic community here.
(English below)

Toen kwam pastoor Monninkhof in Enschede.

In het begin leek alles a piece of cake.

An Introduction to the International Community of Enschede

In 2009 we started in a student apartment in the city center with Father Anthony, ITC student and Jesuit from India. On our request for a Mass, he said: if you take care of hosts, then I will take care of celebrating a Mass in English! So we turned to Ariëns Katholieke Studenten. They went to Saint Paul’s Parish Enschede where a box of hosts was given: the most precious gift we could receive! Because now we could celebrate our first International Mass!

We, that is the International Catholic Community (ICC). The ICC serves a particular minority group: international students and expats (not to be confused with immigrants). Attention is focused on people who stay briefly for work or study in the Netherlands: too short to learn Dutch. Communication and cultural differences can be obstacles to participate on equal level. Therefore this minority needs protection and encouragement to represent themselves. Moreover, these young adults often have no friends here yet. We take care of them as a family with a warm home. We welcome them to be our guests in whom we honor Christ as our pilgrims in St. James’ Parish. In return, they bring us from their country, which is often full of blooming faith, innovative ideas for building up a faith community.

Back to that student apartment: soon it became too small. This was reason for Ariëns Katholieke Studenten to propose to move to St. Paul's Chapel near the campus. Unfortunately, Father Anthony would go back to India soon. Then Father Monninkhof became parish priest in Enschede. Ariëns Katholieke Studenten invited him over and soon the International Mass celebrations were continued. In 2011 the Ariëns Music Ministry was established. With their enthusiasm, they encourage the congregation in singing. From some Dutch parishioners we received our own English-language Roman Missal, a gift that we continuously use with love!

In 2013, Father Monninkhof asked if we would agree to move to St. James' Church. And here we are, back in town! Campus residents didn’t like it at first. Downtown residents were completely fine of course! The move meant a separation with Saint Paul’s Community, but also a new and hopeful "marriage" with Saint James' Community. In the beginning everything seemed a piece of cake. But it turned out to be quite a puzzle to figure out well how we could rebuild the herd after the move and get it back on track. So this is what we are working on. We therefore ask for your prayers and commitment, to make us grow in hope that it will be all fine soon!
